 말이 가지고 있는 힘

 한국 사람들은 이상하다, 난 한국 사람들이 싫다.

This was written by Jaebum Park (real name Jay Park), on his homepage.

 이 글을 박 재범(실명: 박 제이) 홈페이지에서 봤을 겁니다.

Park is a Korean pop singer in the group “2PM”.

박 군은 2PM 한국 가수입니다.  

As a famous musical artist he has a large influence on many people, especially (such as) teenagers.

 유명 연예인으로서 그는 많은 사람들, 특히 십대에 큰 영향을 주고 있습니다.

This did not die down easily.

이 일은 쉽게 수그러들지 않았습니다.

I think his method of expression was very wrong as a singer in Korea.

 저는 박군이 한국 가수로서 그 표현 방법에 잘못이 있다고 생각합니다.

What is this tragic story about? 

 그런데 도대체 이게 웬 말입니까?

Some people expected Park to make efforts to take responsibility for his hurtful words.

 어떤 사람들은 박 군이 그가 한 말에 책임을 지는 모습을 보여줘야 한다고 여겼습니다.

Maybe that’s why he fled to the US.

 그래서 그가 미국으로 갔는지도 모릅니다.

There is a saying, “Good words cost nothing.”

 말 한 마디에 천냥 빚을 갚는다라는 말이 있습니다.

This means how influential and important our speech can be.

 우리가 하는 말이 그만큼 힘이 있다는 뜻입니다.

But many people are unaware of how dangerous it is.

 하지만 많은 사람들은 그게 얼마나 위험한지 모르고 있습니다.

The tragedy still goes on.

그리고 그 피해는 계속 생기고 있습니다.

We have got to face it right now.

 지금 당장 우리는 그 걸 봐야 합니다.

What can we do to stop this? 

 어떻게 해야 할까요?

As students pursuing the true value of knowledge, we should pick our words carefully creating a healthy campus lives for ourselves.

 진정한 지식을 얻으려는 사람들로서, 우리 스스로 튼튼한 학교 생활을 만들어가며 우리는 말을 잘 골라 써야 합니다.

We all have freedom of expression in language.

 우리 모두 하고 싶은 말을 할 수 있다.

The only problem is that we are responsible for what we say.

 그렇지만 우리는 우리가 한 말에 책임을 져야 합니다.

 Language is such a powerful and influential means of showing one’s feelings and thoughts that it cuts more than swords.

 말은 한 사람이 가지고 있는 생각과 감정을 보여주는 데 너무나 강하고 영향을 수는 수단이기에 칼보다 더 많은 상처를 줍니다.  

We are often judged by how we speak or by the words we use.

 사람들은 어떻게 말하는지, 어떤 말을 쓰는지로 우리를 봅니다.
